Alternative and purchase

A Bartender alternative for Mac: evaluate Tuck before you buy.

This page is for choosing a replacement. Review Tuck's purchase terms, try its menu-bar workflow, and keep the comparison focused on whether it fits your own setup.

Choosing a Bartender replacement

Bartender's official site describes controls for what appears in the menu bar and when, including reveal actions, search, hotkeys, and triggers. Start by listing the behavior you need day to day, then test that workflow with Tuck before changing your setup.

Tuck Pro is US$14.99 before applicable tax for a one-time perpetual license on up to three machines; see Tuck's terms and checkout for the current purchase details.

Try the workflow before switching

  1. Keep a record of the menu-bar items you use most often.
  2. Download Tuck and arrange a small test set of items.
  3. Use the result to decide whether Tuck's workflow is the right replacement for you.
  4. Review the terms and checkout only when you are ready to purchase.

Free and paid Bartender alternatives compared

Bartender's site says Bartender 7 is built for macOS 27; it offers a one-time licence, a yearly Pro plan and a lifetime option, and Bartender 6 remains the version for macOS 26 (checked 2026-09-30). If you want to leave Bartender, these are the options we can source:

  • A free Bartender alternative: Thaw is free and open source (GPL-3.0) and supports macOS 27 in its 3.0 alpha builds. Ice is also free and open source, but we found no macOS 27 statement from its maintainer. See the Ice alternative page.
  • A subscription option: Lounge's site lists US$3.99 per year with a 7-day trial and says it requires macOS 26 or later; its Golden Gate guide (published September 25, 2026) describes using Lounge on macOS 27 (checked 2026-09-30).
  • One-time, no subscription: Tuck has a free tier with no time limit, and Pro is a one-time US$14.99 payment for up to three Macs.

For every app's macOS 27 position, with sources and dates, see the macOS 27 menu bar app compatibility table. The best Mac menu bar apps guide compares them by workflow.

One stable release for macOS 14–27. Shelf icons are sharper and more accurate, with distorted or washed-out menu-bar captures fixed and apps no longer falling back to generic icons; Notification Center opens from the clock noticeably faster without briefly revealing hidden icons, and clicking the clock while Notification Center is open now closes it. On macOS 27, core system controls remain visible and items from the same app are managed together. Screen Recording enables original menu-bar images in Shelf; without it, app icons are used.
